ARCHITECTURE, DESIGN AND CRAFTSMANSHIP FOR THE CITY

Creativity in peripheral contexts of the city of Naples.

This is the key topic around which the "Creative Place Making" seminar is developed within the evocative sixteenth-century cloister of the Made in Cloister Foundation between December 2022 and February 2023.

The cycle was structured over three days:

The first intervention, in collaboration with Est(ra)moenia: Laboratorio di città, and led by Diarc - university of architecture - included a tour of the east area of Naples which ended right at Made in Cloister, adjacent to the Porta Capuana, the gateway or arriving from the eastern part of the city. Numerous professionals from various sectors took part during the talk:

Davide de Blasio, director of the Made in Cloister Foundation which has made contemporary art the engine of recovery and regeneration of the cloister of Santa Caterina in Formiello and the Porta Capuana area; 

Ambrogio Prezioso, President of the Est(ra)moenia association which brings together companies, universities and third sector operators to connect the east area of Naples to the rest of the city; 

Ferruccio Izzo director of Diarc with Alberto Calderoni and Marianna Ascolese; Bianco Valente, artists who have made art in the public space their vocation; 

the Ecole and Orizzontale collectives who brought their experience of the temporary use of public spaces; 

Laura Lieto, councilor for urban planning of the city of Naples who recounted the new opportunity for dialogue between private and public implemented thanks to resolution 276/22.

The second appointment of the cycle provides an insight into one of the productive and artisanal activities that have always characterized Neapolitan production, namely the manufacture and processing of ceramics.

In particular, the seminar aims to generate a debate on the dialogue between contemporary architecture and urban regeneration by continuing with a focus on a handcrafted object born from the collaboration between the designer Marcello Panza and the craftsman Pasquale de Palma. The result is "Alzata Napoletana", which embodies a double soul: design and craftsmanship merge in fact in this porcelain work decorated with coffee pot handles recovered in local markets.
The workshop boasts the presence of qualified interlocutors who invite us to reflect on the importance of the material and immaterial culture of artisan manufacturing in contexts of urban regeneration.

The introduction by Davide de Blasio is followed by speeches by Giovanna Fossa, full professor of the Department of Architecture (see the slides), Construction Engineering and Built Environment of the Milan Polytechnic, by Marianna Ascolese, a young architect whose research explores and analyzes the urban space as an element capable of defining the character of places and finally by the designer Marcello Panza and the craftsman Pasquale de Palma.

The third round of the cycle of meetings will focus on the dialogue between young artisans and artists and on the social impact of craftsmanship.
